Oktoberfest in Germany!
One of the best sight-seeing and party-style vacations is a fun-filled trip over to Munich, Germany for the sixteen-day extravagant festival known as “Oktoberfest“! It’s estimated that around six million people make this trek annually for the festival which is held the 16 days leading up to the first Sunday in October. The celebration first began in 1810, after the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The couple arranged the festival to celebrate their marriage and also in conjunction with a great horse race several days later. The tradition held on for the most part through the years, and continues to be a large scale celebration to this day.
The focus of Oktoberfest is on the Bavarian cultural traditions, which include celebrations of beer, food, music, dance and good times. With a heavy focus on drinking, a twelve gun salute symbolizes the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at 12:00 o’clock. The Minister-President of Bavaria has the honor of the first beer, and then the partying begins! Patrons enjoy various brews, loud music (after 6PM) and lots of great foods.

Paulaner Oktoberfest beer
Here’s some general information about Oktoberfest beer (from Oktoberfest website, 2009):
- Among the many attractions, the “liquid gold” is probably the most important thing at the Oktoberfest. As usual, over 6 million liters of beer will be drunk this year.
Price:
- A “Mass”, one litre of beer, will cost between 8,30 € and 8,60 € this year.
Serving times:
- Beer will be sold in the tents from 10.00 to 22.30 on weekdays and from 9.00 to 22.30 on saturdays, sundays and holidays.

Food
When it comes too food at Oktoberfest, meat eaters will be in heaven. Amongst the large amounts of fare served are sausages, pretzels, potato & bread dumplings, chicken and pork. Make sure you bring your appetite along with your thirst for German brews!
If you travel to Germany for the festival and partying, you’ll also want to enjoy the scenery there as well. Munich is a beautiful spot for sightseers as well. Here’s a selection of pictures from a recent trip to Munich for Oktoberfest 2009, with more information.

Paulaner Beer wagon in Oktoberfest parade
Let the celebration begin! Above you see a Paulaner Oktoberfest beer wagon loaded with kegs being pulled through the streets for a Sunday parade to celebrate Oktoberfest 2009!

Rathaus-Glockenspiel in town square of Marienplatz
Pictured above is the Rathaus-Glockenspiel, which can be found in the town square of Marienplatz at central Munich. It’s a popular tourist attraction which was completed back in the early 1900’s. The large magnificent, historic structure tells two famous stories. On the top half, life-sized figures depict the tale of Duke Wilhelm V’s marriage to Renata of Lothringen. Behind them are jousting knights. On the bottom half, the Schäfflerstanz (the coopers’ dance) is shown. This scene displays the barrel makers who risked their lives by going back into town after a bad plague had struck evywhere. These coopers let everyone else know it was safe to go back out to the streets after this rough time. Later on the Duke of Bavaria requested the dance be recreated in honor of this.

Munich Residence
Pictured above is the “Residenz” or Residence. It’s a beautiful, historic great hall which is the palace of generations of several rulers of Germany. It is also located in the center of Munich, where it once served as the royal palace of the long line of Bavarian monarchs. It’s a large complex which includes ten courtyards and a museum which displays a total 130 rooms! The particular inner part of the Residenz seen above is known as The Renaissance Antiquarium or the Hall of Antiquities. It was completed within 3 years back in 1571 for Albert V to house his antique collection, and is considered the largest Renaissance hall north of the Alps. The hall once served as a library, was covered by a barrel vault and currently is adorned with majestic paintings by various artists.

Flying chairs are just one ride at the fun Oktoberfest festival!
There’s also a great big amusement park you can check out, but you may want to do that without having too many brews first! Many of the rides are of the exciting, spinning, jolting and fast variety. The park features the most recent attracion known as “The Tower”, which is a 28 meter tall playground with all sorts of spectacles inside. People get a view from way up above Oktoberfest and Munich making for an interesting high-up perspective! There’s also the Silberturm, which is only 10 meters high but features free-falling and jumping effect rides for your amusement. You may also want to check out the pulsating spinning ride called “Techno Power” which includes a DJ spinning records while you spin in circles!
All in all, you will find all sorts of fun at an Oktoberfest getaway. You can also make this a family trip with the right planning. There’s plenty of fun, non-drinking activities for the under-aged kids. For more information check out the official website for Oktoberfest here.

Napa Valley Winery Vineyard
If you’re looking for a truly great, relaxing getaway, plan a trip to wine country, Napa Valley, California! A trip to Napa Valley can be a wine lover’s dream, as the area is full of vineyards, wine tasting, and beautiful scenery. You’ll learn about the creation and history of wines, all while being able to drink it in, and bring back some tasty souvenir or investment bottles for home!

Napa is for Wine Lovers!
(Note: To plan your Napa/Sonoma trip on a budget, we highly recommend Frommer’s Frommer’s Napa & Sonoma Day by Day which gives you over 220 pages with 25 Smart ways to see the wine country!)
You don’t have to stay in just the Napa Valley area for your tour either. Start your trip in San Fransisco, take the 1 1/2 hour ride by car along the scenic route to Napa Valley. Hit the wineries and wine tasting spots in Napa, before embarking for Sonoma and Calistoga, two more great areas for the wine lover. There’s a lot of wineries out there, so it’s best to plan your trip ahead of time, so you don’t overspend your time or money.
Here’s our three favorite Napa Valley wineries from a tour of wine country:
1) Imagery Estate Winery (Sonoma) – Imagery combines the experience of great tasting, innovative new wines with unique and dazzling visual art at their winery. Sip on an Imagery wine, then check out their 200+ pieces of amazing art in their gallery, which is comprised of pieces by new young talents and recognized art masters from all over the world. This winery believes in fun and not the typical wine tours, so prepare to be part of something special when visiting.

Clos Pegase Winery temple
2) Clos Pegase Estate Winery (Calistoga) - Clos Pegase has a catch phrase of “Where Vine Meets Divine” as they have an ancient Greek/Roman theme, with majestic temple (above) and inspiring works of art. Translated loosely “Clos” is French for “enclosed vineyard” and “Pegase” is the French for “Pegasus”, the mythical horse. Their overall inspiration comes from Bacchus the God of Wine, so they created a merging of great wines and wonderful art pieces. There’s even 20,000 square feet of aging caves carved deep into rock knoll beyond Clos Pegase. The cave also is used for wonderful celebrations and special events at times. Definitely add Clos Pegase to your list of wineries to see!
3) Arrowood Vineyards (Sonoma) – Arrowood is a beautiful winery which offers tours and tastings daily by appointment. Their tasting tours range from $5 up to $30 depending on your choice. Opt for the $30 tour to see the vineyard and wine cellar anytime between 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM. What makes Arrowood’s winery so inviting is its self-proclaimed “world’s greatest veranda”. Their large New England-style deck overlooks their beautiful vineyards as well as the oak-studded hills of Sonoma Valley. You can sit back, relax and enjoy their many wines while taking in the gorgeous scene.
You’ll more than likely choose to fly into San Fransisco’s airport for your California trip. So while you’re out there, take some time to check out the wonderful city of San Fransisco. It features the famed trolley car ride, scenic streets, shops, restaurants, water scenery, Alcatraz, and Candlestick Park where the San Fransisco Giants play baseball from April through late fall! A San Fransisco and Napa Valley winery vacation can be a relaxing, fun and once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Extra Tips & Advice for Napa:
- Consider investing in a cheap wine bottle corkscrew just in case. Some hotels/restaurants will charge a fee of $15 or so for “uncorking”.
- Keep in mind at many of the wineries you can do wine tastings as a couple, if you’re with a significant other, to save on buying two tasting tickets!
- Find Cheap Flights so you can get the best deal for your airfare and take a much needed, relaxing trip to visit Napa CA – wine country!

Sites to See: The Great Wall of China
Posted on December 1, 2008 - Filed Under Asia, China, Interesting Facts, Sites to See, Travel, Traveling Abroad, Vacation

(Recent picture of The Great Wall of China)
The Great Wall of China is one of the most magnificent landmarks standing today and many tourists make the trip to see this structure in China. Here are some of the interesting facts and history surrounding the Great Wall of China.
- There were several Great Walls built to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire from attacks by Xiognu during the 6th century BC and the 16th century . The most famous of the walls has very little remaining of it. It was built by the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, between 220 & 200 BC.
- There are a total of four Great Walls during China’s history, built under the direction of different dynasties:
208 BC (the Qin Dynasty)
1st century BC (the Han Dynasty)
1138 – 1198 (the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period)
1368-1620 (from Hongwu Emperor until Wanli Emperor of the Ming Dynasty)
- The current wall was built by the Ming Dynasty. Construction continued by the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), and the Great Wall became the world’s largest military structure ever erected.
- The Great Wall is considered the world’s longest human-made structure stretching over 4,000 miles in total length from Shanhaiguan in the east to Lop Nur in the west.
- It is estimated that some 2-3 million Chinese died during the centuries it took to build and maintain the Great Wall of China. At its peak, the Wall was guarded by over 1 million men.
- Signal points are prominent on certain sections of The Great Wall. These were located at high points along the wall to allow for increased visibility so soldiers could warn of enemy attacks, or call for reinforcements.
- The Great Wall was mainly built from Earth or Taipa, stones, and wood, before bricks were used. The Ming Dynasty introduced heavy use of bricks in many areas of the wall, as well as tile, lime and stone.
- A 1932 Ripley’s Believe it or Not! cartoon claimed that the Wall was visible from the moon. This claim is unfounded and untrue. There’s a more popular debate over whether the Great Wall is visible from low orbit outer space. Several astronauts have claimed they saw it, but not without the aid of a viewing device. Others thought they saw the Wall from space but saw the Great Canal of China instead.
- One of the best times to visit the Great Wall may be during the Spring season, in order to avoid tourists. It’s a beautiful site amongst the trees, plants and vegetation changing colors. Visiting in fall gives an amazing view with pleasant weather, making autumn another great time to visit. In winer, the wall and mountains nearby can become covered by snow, offering a very beautiful scene. Tourists are also fewer as this time of year is very cold.
